Good Trouble
My “origin story” as a Union activist began with the threat of Charter co-location. Like other schools in our area, we began to lose teacher positions due to declining enrollment. I worked with UTLA staffers, community groups, teachers, and classified staff to defend our school.
* I created and presented a powerpoint presentation at a family town hall that debunked charter myths. This limited the loss of students that enrolled in the charter.
* Helped organize a community protest march. We had over 75 students, parents, and staff members. This lead to the removal of the local YMCA Director who was a member of the Charter Board.
* Worked with Community Organizations - Eastside Padres and Centro CSO.
* Researched school leaders and staff. Created flyers and staged multiple protests.
* Led a protest during their School orientation that helped to cut their initial enrollment by 25%.
* Attended over 90% of the Charter Board Meetings. Worked with the LAUSD Charter Liaison to limit negative effects on our campus.
* When they tried to hold Board Meetings without proper notice, we reported violations of the Brown Act.
* VICTORY - Excelencia Charter Academy closed in June of 2020.
