Goals and Vision
My main goal as a Board of Director is to support and to build strong worksites, collectively pushing back on bully principals and top down mandates from LAUSD. I will support Chapter chairs with quick responses to member needs.
I will defend academic freedom, work to address violence from students, and protect schools from potential closures. LAUSD is not addressing declining enrollment. We need to save ourselves.
Lastly, I will always defend the most vulnerable among us. I will defend immigrants, LGBTQ+ teachers and students, Special Education Students, Black Students, and Homeless/ Foster Youth.
I have worked in multiple areas, with different high-need populations. We need to support the programs that work for our schools - BSAP, Community Schools, Dual Language, and Magnet Programs. We need to centrally fund PSAs, PSWs, and School Psychologists.
Many dues paying members do not feel represented by their Union. We have structures in place for Substitutes, Adult Education, and Special Education. But for years Health and Human Service workers and other Itinerants do not feel represented. They do not see their needs represented in our contracts. It is time to consider a restructuring that allows for more Board of Directors that represent specific groups. Special Education Itinerants need their own Director. Arts Teachers need representation also.
Chapter Chairs need more support. Elementary Chapter Chairs do not get release time to support their colleagues. New Chapter Chairs need more training and support.
The first step in empowering members is education. We need accessible on-demand learning for all chapter chairs and general membership so that many Frequently Asked Questions are easily answered. We have started to have more accessible training, but we need more. This will make us a more efficient and more empowered UTLA.
